Why become a foster family?
- To play an active volunteer role in fulfilling our mission: to save more animals every year.
- To provide animals with a safe and comfortable environment where they can be socialized and live normally according to their needs until they find a permanent home.
- To free up space in the shelter for animals with special profiles (animals that are older, have health or behavioural problems, etc.)
What are the requirements?
- Be available to care for the animal every day as if it were your own.
- Agree to foster the animal for a minimum of three months.
- All dogs and cats already in your home must be vaccinated and spayed or neutered.
- Have a room available where the animal can be isolated during the first few days.
- Be easy to reach and willing to come to the shelter on occasion.
- Be willing and able to occasionally receive customers and employees at your home to meet the animal.
Additional requirements for families fostering a litter of kittens:
- Have previous experience fostering a kitten
- Be at home often
- Be comfortable administering care and medication (administering fluids, deworming, tracking weight, etc.)
What types of animals need foster families?
- Our foster family program was initially designed for cats (adult cats, cats that are old, sick or timid, litters of kittens with or without a mother, etc.)
- Occasionally, exotic animals like rabbits may be placed in a foster home.
- Our program has not yet been adapted for dogs.
- You cannot choose the animal placed with you. Animals placed with foster families are selected according to their needs and our priorities.
How can we become a foster family?
- Read the document describing how responsibilities are shared by Proanima and foster families. Note that we provide litter and food for as long as the placement lasts.
- Fill out the online registration form.
- Following a review of your file, an employee will contact you if we have an animal that suits your profile and the environment that you can provide.
- You will then have to come to the shelter to fill out the security verification form (required under an agreement between Proanima and its partner municipalities).
- Once these verifications have been completed, the results are sent to Proanima. This last approval step is required before you can be officially recognized as a foster family.
It goes without saying that you are free to adopt the animal placed with you!
